Ernst H. Winter LOUISIANA TRAPSHOOTING HALL OF FAME 2009 INDUCTEE Ernie Winter was born on February 10, 1926 in Burlington, Iowa. He died on September 17, 2003. He served in the United States Army during World War II from May 24, 1944 until June 6, 1946. He served in Rhineland and central Europe. Ernie received the Victory Medal with 2 Battle Stars, 2 Overseas Bars and Good Conduct Medal. Ernie graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Forestry. He was employed as a Forest Ranger for a paper mill in Tupelo, Mississippi. He later worked for Kemper Insurance where he retired in 1983 as Senior Claims Adjuster. Ernie began shooting registered targets in 1965. He regularly attended the Iowa State Shoot throughout his entire career. In his earlier trapshooting years in Louisiana, he regularly drove from Tupelo to New Orleans with his wife, Jacqueline, and two young daughters, Elizabeth Ann and Mary-Katherine. His daughters spent many days at South Louisiana Gun Club with their father. Ernie served as both the President and Secretary/Treasurer of the Louisiana Trapshooting Association. Ernie won eleven trophies at Louisiana State Shoots as well as trophies from other states. Events include 1991 Veteran Champ, 1995 Veteran Handicap Champ and 1996 Senior Vet Doubles Champ. Ernie shot registered targets every year from 1965 until his death in 2003. He was a great attendee of the Iowa State Shoot and many state shoots within the region. During his last ten years, he regularly attended the Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Missouri State Shoots. Throughout his career of 39 years, he shot 103,000 singles, 70,900 handicap, and 60,050 doubles. LTA Hall of Fame Committee September 26, 2009 |
