Clarence Vascocu, Jr.

LOUISIANA TRAPSHOOTING HALL OF FAME

2006 INDUCTEE

Clarence Vascocu was one of Louisiana’s finest trapshooters of yesteryear.  He competed in the sport at the state level from 1959 to the late-eighties.  An excellent shooter in all categories, he won seven La. state ATA championships and another seven state class championships during that time.  He took four singles, one handicap, six doubles, and three HOA/HAA trophies starting in 1967 and continuing through 1988.  He also participated in the Southwestern Zone shoots; taking home 11 trophies.  During his career, he had a target attainment of 51,000 singles, 33,825 handicap and 27,850 doubles for a total of 112,675 targets.

Clarence was born December 14, 1917, and served 29 years with the US post office before retiring as a letter carrier.  He volunteered for service during WW-II and was a part of the demolition team that opened the beach prior to the initial landing at Normandy.  He fought throughout the invasion of Normandy, and afterwards was assigned to serve in Germany for the duration.

Clarence served his sport in an exemplary manner.  For years the state shoot was held at the Shreveport Gun Club.  Clarence was the “computer” during the shoots.  He processed all the scores and posted the standings on a continuous basis when the shoots were attended by twice the number that attend today.  He ran the shoots with flawless accuracy and without delay while competing and winning more than his share of events.

During his career, Clarence was very active at the Shreveport Gun Club.  He served on the board of directors for a number of years.  He also displayed compassion for new shooters arriving at the club.  As it often happens in large organizations, it was difficult for a new person to feel welcome.  Clarence cared about the new shooter, and helped him both technically and socially.

Clarence passed on December 11, 1988, but his contribution to the sport is well remembered by all of those who had the privilege of joining him on the trap field.
